Primes data base
The problem of duplication of human time, cpu time,
and core, because of poor communication, is one of my pet peeves.
Although I personally can't use the table of Prime numbers, I would
support the establishment of an indexed file of commonly-needed
knowledge (dictionaries, numerical tables, common LISP editing
macros, useful SAIL I/O routines, etc.)
Sometime this week I'll try to think up some more examples of what
would be nice to have around in such a facility, and try to dredge up
any files, functions, etc. that could fit in.
An interesting kind of entry would be a NEGATIVE one: a bunch of
warnings of very common mistakes, kinds of computations NOT to try,
etc. This would have to be carefully done to make it worth keeping
as an active system entry (still useful, though less exciting, would
be to collect such "hard lessons" into a booklet. A low-level example
of this is "doing MAPCONC x <destructive function>". A higher-level
example is "using LISP for number-crunching type work".
